In the Americas, Spanish is the language of independence—not of conquest.
🇯🇪 New Spain → 300 years → 60% spoke an Indigenous language
🇲🇽 Mexican Republic → 100 years → 16% spoke an Indigenous language
Before the Empire’s 16th-century conquest of Mexico, there were roughly 350 Indigenous languages. By 1821, at independence, most still survived—and about 60% of the population spoke one. Castellanization had occurred only gradually, shaped by urban mestizaje, global trade, and epidemic-driven depopulation—NOT by linguistic imposition.
After independence, the shift accelerated. Indigenous language speakers fell to 38% in 1889, 16% in 1930, and just 5.8% in 2020.
It was the Mexican Republic, not the conquest, that imposed Spanish. The New Mexican state and their elites made it the national language, seeing unity in Spanish as essential for nationhood. This pattern was repeated throughout the continent, many 19th-century republican “liberators” openly sought to abolish native languages as obstacles to national unity and progress.
If we take the ~300-350 languages at independence (1821) and the 68 languages remaining today, the numbers are alarming:
≈81% of Mexico’s Indigenous languages have disappeared since independence.
≈19% survive today (though many are critically endangered).

I have arrived in Geneva, Switzerland, and even at this moment, I still cannot believe that I am here. I still cannot believe that I survived the genocide that my people in Gaza are enduring.
For the first time in my life, I have left Gaza, and for the first time, I feel safe after years of fear and war. I am deeply grateful to everyone who helped me reach this place, and I will do everything I can to achieve what I came here for — for myself, for my family, and for Gaza.
But the truth is that only my body is here. My heart, mind, and soul remain there in Gaza, with my family in Deir al-Balah, and with everyone who continues to face death, fear, and suffering every single day.
I may be far away from Gaza now, but Gaza will never leave me. I will carry it with me wherever I go, and it will remain present in every step I take and in every success I achieve.
A very dangerous new nightmare we are living in Gaza City, and no one in the world is paying attention to it.
Days ago, the Israeli army installed huge military cranes, each about 30 meters tall, on the eastern areas it controls. These cranes are equipped with machine guns and cameras, and they fire randomly and almost continuously at tents, streets, and exposed neighborhoods.
Gaza City is extremely narrow, only 10 kilometers wide. A single crane at that height is enough to expose the entire city from east to west. Every street, every square, every tent, every house has become completely exposed. There is no place to hide, and not a single moment of safety.
In just the past two days, three people were killed by fire from these cranes. One of them was sitting quietly with his father in a small café, trying to breathe for a few minutes. Hours later, a 5year old girl was killed while playing near her home.
These cranes have turned the entire city into an open field. The latest military technologies are directed at civilians. We have become an open testing ground for their new weapons. The horror is not just in the sound… it is the constant feeling of being an exposed target at all times, where even children cannot run in the street without fear.
There is genuinely no way for “free market” Right-Wingers to cope over North Korea’s economic success story.
It hasn’t adopted market reforms like China and Vietnam did. It retained centrally planned, conventional socialist economics. And it’s thriving in spite of having been besieged and isolated by the US for decades.
That’s the power of Communism.
🚨 CUBA WAS NEVER ABOUT COMMUNISM 🚨
Tarik Cyril Amar argues that Washington’s obsession with Cuba was never truly about communism.
The Soviet Union collapsed. Cuba lost its great ideological and military backer. The island became isolated. And yet the United States never ended the punishment because Cuba’s real crime was sovereignty.
That is what the Monroe Doctrine really means.
For Washington, no country in the Caribbean or Latin America is allowed full sovereignty. They are expected to obey, submit, and accept their place as vessels of American power.
Cuba refused.
And that refusal — not communism — is the core of the conflict.

Marco Rubio posted a video to Cubans claiming there’s no oil blockade. Needless to say, it didn’t land well with Cubans who are living through blackouts that became far worse after the U.S. began stopping oil from getting to the island.
Ukrainians should thank Cuba and support Cuba against U.S. oil embargo. But Ukraine voted with US lately in the UN against Cuba. That’s ungrateful. Cuban leader Fidel Castro built a sanatorium in the beautiful Caribbean coast Talala for the treatment of victims suffering from the Chornobyl nuclear disaster. I witnessed that first hand there during my visit to Cuba. There was also a school for Chinese students learning medicine and Spanish etc.
