This is an open call to Mr Peter Obi @PeterObi

I am writing to appeal for your support and assistance on behalf of some unfairly treated students in Calabar.

This to let you know sir that the VC of the university of Calabar has told over 300 students of dentistry to leave the university. The university over-admitted the students and are now threatening to expel them after many years in the school as the university is not accredited to train that high number of students.

Some of these students are now planning to kill themselves and commit suicide.

As a responsible public figure,
And as an aspiring President sir,
Please kindly intervene and lend your voice to help save this situation.

Please do NOT allow this injustice to happen. Please help me retweet this and share it everywhere until Mr Peter Obi sees this and responds.

Dental students in UNICAL are being left in limbo.
The school admitted far more students than its approved quota and now can’t graduate them. Final-year students are being told to transfer to other departments or leave entirely after 7 years in medical school. This is heartbreaking and deeply unfair💔

University of Calabar's VC and Provost of Medical college have asked all the students of the faculty of dentistry to transfer to other dental schools in Nigerian as they do not have facilities to enable the MDCN( medical and dental council of Nigeria) to come increase the quota for graduation from 10 to about 40. The school management knew from the beginning that the only have a quota of 10 and they still went ahead to over admit students more than they can graduate. Currently we have classes with numbers as high as 128, another class of 97. I am in final year class and we are 39 in my class.
There is a class currently above mine who have concluded their final exam( part V BDS professional exams in May) but are been left hanging because they can't graduate the 31 of them.

A few student are having suicidal thoughts already.
I am appealing that this issue be brought to the notice of the public and necessary authority so they .The vice chancellor in person of Prof. Florence Obi and the provost of Medical College can be compelled to do the needful,

You claimed MDCN is willing to give waiver to other schools to absorb dental students from UNICAL, Why not tell MDCN to give the same waiver to Medicine so that the affected students can be absorbed internally?

I think about this issue, and I painfully laugh! I've just been imagining if it was me. Becaausssee, I can actually run mad!

1. University of Calabar has reportedly asked over 300 dental students, from 200 level to 600 level, to go home. Not because they failed oo, not because they broke any rules, but because the university itself violated a regulatory limit by admitting far more students than approved by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

This is a complete violation of students’ futures.

I mean, think about the pain, think about the psychological trauma!

2. How does an institution, one that should embody diligence, one that should be meticulous about structure and vision, make the stupid mistake of admitting 90 students for a programme with an approved quota of 10? I even heard that they admitted over 900 for a course that the approved quota is 150! Why you dey bite more than wetin you fit chew. Are you people maaddd!!! The problem is, we always think that we can get away with so many irregularities in this country!

Who monitors these intakes? Where is the system of checks and balances that should have flagged this long before now?

3. These students are not statistics oo, they are human beings, many of whom have waited years before gaining admission, sat for UTME (maybe not once, not twice, not even three times and some even more), and invested the most vibrant years of their lives into chasing a noble dream of becoming dentists and serve humanity.
Today, they are being told, *“Go home.”*
You know Why? Because the university failed them. Leemaaoo!!

4. What makes this worse is the lack of accountability. No commitment to absorb the affected students into similar programmes. No roadmap. No hope. Just silence and suspension.

I honestly doubt that the university management understand the weight of what they have done. The mindless justification of “we’re following professional guidelines” rings hollow, when you were the ones who violated the guidelines in the first place.

If your children were affected, would this still be your response? Well, maybe, maybe not, but all of you are actually wicked! Haabbbaa!!

5. I mean, This is not the fault of the students.

This is a breach of their right to education.

This is a dent on the credibility of the university system.

This is in fact, a national embarrassment.

Some of these students may never return to school. Some may slide into depression, poverty, or worse. And this time, it won’t be because of personal failure, it will be because the system failed them.

6. I really hope that there's:

i. Immediate suspension of the directive sending the students home.

ii. Dialogue with MDCN to find possible remedy! There has to be a solution

iii. Government intervention at the level of the Federal Ministry of Education, because this cannot be treated as just a local UNICAL issue. It is a national disgrace.

Would have called on NANS to rise to the occasion, but RIP NANS.

7. In a country where opportunity is already a scarce commodity, to waste the lives of hundreds of young Nigerians because of institutional recklessness is unjust, it is evil. This cannot and must not be allowed to stand.
