The FCC is preparing a measure that would bar new Chinese optical transceivers, which move data across fiber networks and are a critical component inside AI data centers.

Officials want the restriction published this year and taking effect immediately, citing risks including data theft, malware and remote service disruption.

The administration is trying to act before Chinese hardware becomes deeply embedded in U.S. AI infrastructure, seeking to avoid a repeat of the costly, yearslong effort to remove Huawei equipment from telecom networks.
