Emotionally vulnerable moment for Big Meeks.

He wrote about his knee injury in his book. It was at the end of his book and it's the most emotional part of that book for me. Read the excerpt where he wrote about how he gave up on his knees below;

“Terry’s call was exactly what I’d been waiting for. I hadn’t kicked a
ball for two years. Not properly, anyway. Not in a game. My last appearance for Aston Villa had been in October 2016. I’d come off after an hour then, pretending I had cramp but really worried about the feeling in my knee: I could feel it starting to swell up.

Since then, I seemed to have been
bouncing from one injury to another. Even when I was fit, I’d not been able
to do anything but train. That had been with the first team, at the start. But
after a while, I couldn’t even do that. I was sent to train with the reserves,
the kids, instead. I was stuck.

As soon as JT’s name flashed up on my phone, I thought that was about
to change. Villa had just appointed Dean Smith as manager. Terry, who I’d
known since our days with England together, had been installed as his
assistant. The gaffer wanted to see me, he said. It was music to my ears.

He was going to offer me a fresh start. All the problems of the last couple of
years would be water under the bridge. He’d give me the opportunity to
prove myself, to win my place back. I was only 30. I had another couple of
years in me, at least. In the Championship, maybe more. Dean Smith was going to offer me the chance to feel like a footballer again.
Or not, as it turned out. I always liked managers who were honest with
me, and Dean was completely honest. He didn’t try and lead me on. He
didn’t shirk the difficult conversation. He told me that the way I was
moving didn’t look right to him. There was something wrong with my knee:
he could see it in the way I ran and, most of all, in the way I was slowing
down when I had the ball at my feet. I was taking too long to control the
ball. It was as though I was very carefully positioning myself before playing a pass just so my knee didn’t go. In the process, I was slowing the team down. He wanted to play with a bit of zip. He needed everything to be
quick, sharp, instant. I was too ponderous. I couldn’t play football the way wanted to play football. There would, he told me, be no place for me in his Aston Villa team.

“I’ve always liked to feel like I’m real with myself. I can be honest about
my shortcomings. I know what I’m good at and what I’m not. During my
career, I knew when I’d played well and when I hadn’t. I’m not delusional.
But as he said it, I didn’t really understand. I felt I was playing pretty well in training. I thought I was doing fine. Afterwards, I went to check with the other players. I asked them how they thought I’d been playing. They
assured me I was fine, doing well, not a problem. Of course you don’t know
if they’re saying that because they genuinely mean it, or because they don’t want to hurt your feelings. Deep down, I was aware that it didn’t matter.
That conversation with Dean Smith was the end of my career. I knew it. I
just didn’t want to admit that I knew it, not right away.”

The pain of football can be long-lasting and permanent. It takes the best and boldest to live through it.
