@realJimmyFay I don't mean that any owns certain culture. But those who talk about culture while learning from a diluted medium. Like almost all of the Chinese food in the US was never a thing in China/Asia. It shouldn't represent the food in China when you only had it in the US. #SP21

@realJimmyFay I have a conflicted feeling about cultural appropriation. It's definitely good for the culture to be recognized and loved. But it's weird for others to try to represent your culture and sometimes send the wrong impression/ image of the culture. #SP21

Over time, people gave up on trying because they feel defeated for not being able to compete with successful people. Especially with the increasing standard of success. "Normal" on social media is a salary of 10000Yuan/month when 40% of the population earn less than 1000. #SP21

I think it is a result of over-competition in the labor market. People are trying harder and harder to "one-up" their opponent to get a seat in a big company. Those who can't afford to add more "important" skills to their resume are left at a disadvantage. #SP21

@Sacred_Goose I think violence or at least the threat of violence is a very important "tool" in human nature. Countries use the threat of violence as a defense by holding powerful military or weapons. #SP21

@Alie65664572 It might not have been the society as a whole as well. People seek conformity within their community. Like we probably wouldn't care about what someone on the other side of the globe thinks of our decision of coming to UB. #SP21

There's a small problem with it though. The rules are easy to enforce but also somewhat easy to break. Seeing other people not following rules might cause others to stop following because the conformity is not intrinsic but forced upon. #SP21

I definitely feel the quote about shame in my daily life while I was in Taiwan. People often use shame to regulate others. For example, wearing masks during covid. We sort of "judge" each other for not following guideline, so we put our masks on even when there's 0 cases. #SP21

@savnreiss The situation in US probably wouldn't have been that bad if the government locked the border or implemented quarantine for incoming people. But being oppressive like forced lockdown probably isn't going to work in a country that emphasizes freedom.

@savnreiss I agree that the US has been slacking on some of the protection at first. But if you look at China, which locked everyone down, there are still towns that have been in lockdown for months because the government insists on the 0 cases policy. #SP21

I see a lot of arguments against democracy as I dove into some of the Chinese forums. Some said that democracy doesn't fit with Chinese culture and would never work because of the social structure. Do you think the "appropriate" political system could be based on culture? #SP21

We talked about "model minority" in class. I think it is used just to shift the responsibility to the deviant, saying why can't you do it when others can. #SP21
