Ethiopia 🇪🇹 is preparing to launch its first large-scale domestic gold refinery, ending its decades-long practice of exporting raw gold to Dubai for refining.

Under a new policy, the National Bank of Ethiopia requires all gold mined in the country to be refined locally into standard bullion bars before export.

The refinery is expected to increase export earnings, strengthen foreign exchange reserves, and help reduce gold smuggling.

The facility is in its final testing phase and is expected to begin operations in mid-to-late 2026, supporting growing gold production from major mining projects, including the Kurmuk Gold Project.

Eureka Gold Mine has commissioned the first phase of its 5.4MW solar power plant in Guruve, reinforcing Zimbabwe's shift towards renewable energy and sustainable mining.

The US$4 million first phase forms part of a 16.2MW, US$15 million solar project due for completion in Q1 2027. Upon completion, the mine is expected to generate more electricity than it consumes, exporting surplus power to the national grid through net-metering.

The investment will enhance energy security, reduce operating costs, create jobs, cut carbon emissions, and support Zimbabwe's industrialisation, clean energy transition, and Vision 2030 development goals. 🇿🇼
