Story time.

So one day, when I was about 20 and still living with my parents, my dad came home from work. He told my sisters and I a strange anecdote.

He said, "Did you hear that story on the news today?"

I said, "No. What happened?"

He said, "A man came home to find his wife and kids packing to leave him. So he shot them all dead and then he shot himself. You'd better never try to leave me."

We all froze. The tension was palpable. The weirdest part was, he'd told us that exact same story, years before, but this time I viewed it as a death threat.

The next day, while he was back at work, I snuck into his bedroom and stole his .357 magnum revolver. I wrapped it in a towel and carefully positioned the gun case back on the shelf so he wouldn't notice it was gone (unless he picked it up).

I made sure it wasn't loaded and took the gun to my own bedroom and hid it deep in a box full of knitting supplies.

That evening he came home and went straight to his room. Maybe 5 or 10 minutes later, he came back out and he just glared at me. It felt like minutes passed, but it was probably seconds. But I knew, in that moment, that he knew what I'd done. He'd moved the case and found it empty.

He never said anything about it.

He pretended like nothing was wrong.

I later gave the gun to my mom and she pawned it to pay her divorce lawyer.
