@M__Allgood The way I think of #ChatGPT in the classroom is like any other tech. Do I make students run regressions by hand? No. Are there circumstances when the “by hand” approach is pedagogically useful? Maybe. But usually I’m more interested in the thinking, not the mechanics. Same here.

For the record, I love #chatgpt and am teaching my students how to use it (and how not to!!!). For them and me, this empowers creativity and cutting edge thinking by letting us shape words—like clay on a potter’s wheel—to express our own human thoughts and ideas.

@M__Allgood Today I found myself using #ChatGPT to write readings for class instead of spending hours digging for articles or chapters that I then would have to cobble together to provide the specific insights I want covered. In minutes, I’d created the exact material I wanted them to know.

I also see how AI generally is going to teach us more about our own humanity—it lays plain the ways we rely on mechanics rather than creativity or originality. For example, chatgpt (IMO) doesn’t write anything emotionally resonant without my strong guidance—or even my words.

It also makes obvious when an idea is neither new nor original. Just because the words are pretty doesn’t mean the ideas are good. Because writing with AI is a coauthorship, the human still needs to take responsibility for the quality of the work. And now “quality”=new ideas.

@climate_clarity @KHayhoe We both know the problem and solution are more complex, and “legislation” does not capture the scale or nature of the global coordination in which we all need to be involved. And without public support, even legislation is impossible. This *is* keeping our eyes on the prize.

RE Her challenge to share solutions: We added solar power to our properties this year. The energy and $$ savings were big enough to noticeably reduce our power bill. Winning!
