It's time for another suggestion I'd like to share with the devs, and I hope you'll hear me out because this isn't just my personal opinion. It's a trend that's happening whether we like it or not.
⚠️COSMETICS ARE LOSING THEIR VALUE!⚠️
I think Brawl Stars has become far too comfortable devaluing existing cosmetics by giving them away through random events. The best example is Jock Stu. It was released as a Legendary Skin three years ago, yet it was eventually handed out for free.
From the devs' perspective, attracting new players may have been the priority, but it also sent a message to the players who had already spent money supporting the game: it didn't matter that they had purchased it, even if they had done so only a week earlier. The same thing happened with True Gold Griff and True Gold Doug. These skins exist to showcase dedication.. either that you've maxed your account or that you're committed to a specific Brawler. Giving them away through random Community Events completely undermines that purpose.
📦GACHA SHOULD REWARD NEW COSMETICS!📦
If Brawler Boxes or any other Gacha are meant to keep rewards exciting, they should mainly contain new cosmetics, not old ones that people previously bought. I know some people will immediately say, "It's their game, they can monetize cosmetics however they want". Of course they can. But I genuinely can't think of another live-service game that regularly gives away "premium" cosmetics to everyone regardless of how many players previously bought them.
📈COSMETICS ARE ONE OF THE TWO PILLARS OF MONETIZATION!📈
Every live-service game is built on two major sources of monetization:
•Progression
•Cosmetics
Every dev team decide how much they want to rely on each. Back in 2024, Frank mentioned on the Time to Explain podcast that roughly 80% of Brawl Stars' revenue came from progression and only 20% from cosmetics. Since then we've received Hypercharged Skins, more Legendary Skins, and many other cosmetic additions. We don't know today's numbers, but we can judge how cosmetics are being treated.
When expensive cosmetics are constantly given away through random Community Events or gacha systems, they naturally lose perceived value. If players believe that anything they buy today will probably become free later, many will simply stop buying cosmetics and wait. That isn't necessarily my own approach, I still buy cosmetics because I want to support the game, but it's an understandable mindset that many players will have. Ironically, constantly giving away existing cosmetics may actually make it harder to increase cosmetic revenue.
👇MY OPINION!👇
I don't think the devs should stop giving away cosmetics altogether. I think they should stop giving away existing premium cosmetics so casually. Instead, create new cosmetics specifically designed to be event rewards while allowing older premium purchases to retain more of their perceived value. That would encourage players to support the game by buying the cosmetics they genuinely like instead of expecting them to become free eventually.
ONE LAST THING!
This also ties into the expectations of part of the f2p community. Some players expect devs to provide both maximum progression and nearly every cosmetic for free. They complain when skins aren't heavily discounted (like during Brawl-O-Ween), but they also complain whenever progression systems become larger. Obviously not every F2P player thinks this way, but I do think these expectations have become increasingly common.
I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks. If you agree, feel free to retweet this post. If you disagree, let's discuss it respectfully in the comments.
