...but it doesn't have to be
opting out of enshittification, one choice at a time
writing about quality, beauty, and the intentional work of living better
@dickiebush This is so true - even just quickly jotting down your top 3 priorities for the day will have you accomplishing/enjoying more than you thought possible
"Remember that the most beautiful things in the world are the most useless; peacocks and lilies, for instance."
-John Ruskin
I wholeheartedly disagree with this. The most beautiful things in the world are actually imperative to support living a life worth experiencing.
Often the most beautiful things aren’t even things - they’re the small routines that set the foundation for a wonderful day.
Attention and beauty are the same dilemma.
-You cannot notice what's beautiful in your life if your nervous system is treating the whole day and everything in it as a threat
-You cannot be moved by small things if your attention has been sold, in small increments, to whatever is trendiest at that small point in time
The across savoring the morning quiet, the regulated nervous system, the phone off the nightstand is really about recovering the capacity to receive beauty.
Not as a luxury, but as the baseline
"A thing of beauty is a joy forever: its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness."
-Keats
When you focus your attention on finding what's beautiful in the world around you, it never fades, it only grows. Inversely, if your attention falls outside of it, you'll never be able fully notice it.
"Beauty will save the world."
- Dostoevsky.
He didn't mean decoration, he meant the capacity to perceive and be moved by what's real, true, and worth keeping alive.
@latkedelrey I've circled back to really enjoying veggie burgers. So many of the alternatives have such a strange aftertaste no matter what you do to them!
...but the impossible hot dogs? I'm fully on board with those
@micheal_al14364@AdenikeOmolar11 just listening to everything around you and paying attention to your breath. watching the clouds go by and listening to the water alone will have you in a meditative state in no time :)
@jsparkblog I have my thoughts, I do my best to keep it together outwardly. It's really challenging some days, hopefully I can always keep it together 😅
At some point, you have to let yourself be witnessed - in the work, in the mistakes, in the becoming. You have to survive being wrong without disappearing. You have to let people ask you the difficult questions and resist the instinct to run when the answers embarrass you.
