To what extent he manages to do it properly and not do a bad film is a whole other thing, but the intentionality os clearly there and the depicyion of odysseus and odyssey as traumas of war instead of hubris might be reasonavle considering modern times and "modern man"

Not to defend Christopher Nolan of all people here but its also clear that his intentions were not to adapt the whole ordeal but to "update" some core points to modern perspectives also on ethics and moral flaws and character and I feel people gloss over this a lot

After watching The Odyssey it's painfully obvious Christopher Nolan knew the "nobody" pun would work but he rewrites Odysseus so much that it wouldn't work for his character. His omission of the pun has nothing to do with it translating into modern dialogue.

Nolan strips Odysseus of his clinically psychotic hubris and replaces it with trauma™. Can't really stab Polyphemus in the eye and then yell out from the boat, "Sorry I did that to you, bro. I got a lot of mental health issues I'm still working out!"
