As of yesterday, the NE corner of Broadway & 12th Street is also known as Fred Bass Way. Bass (1928-2018) took over the family business in 1956 and, the following year, moved the Strand Bookstore from 4th Ave to its current location.

A Barnes & Noble is coming to 181 Avenue A, b/t 11th and 12th streets in the East Village, later this year, per the B&N website. The 11,000-square-foot retail space at the base of Steiner East Village has been vacant since residents began moving into the new condo 8 years ago.
Say goodbye to another old-school NYC diner. Ownership of the Cozy Soup 'n' Burger on Broadway at Astor Place announced that the 54-year-old diner is closing on June 21. The reasons: Rising costs and declining business.
Demolition isn’t so clear cut under New York’s Good Cause legislation.

Two Boots Pizza in the East Village is leaving its longtime corner at Avenue A and 3rd Street after lease talks stalled. Owner Phil Hartman says they’ll stay in the neighborhood, with a new location in the works. The current shop will close at the end of May. 📷 @Joy_of_photos
The NYPD has confirmed that 28-year-old Kavone Horton, who lives a block from the scene, has been charged in the shooting. He remains hospitalized after reportedly being struck by his own ricocheted bullet Saturday night.
The memorial grows for slain deli worker Abdul Saleh, 28, outside Sal’s on 13th & Ave B in the East Village. He was shot & killed during an argument with a customer on Saturday night. Neighbors remember him as someone who 'looked out for absolutely everyone.' 📷 @Joy_of_photos
STIK’s 'Liberty' mural at 9th & Ave A will remain, landlord rep confirmed to EVG after a wave of community support. Workers will paint around the 4-story piece created in 2013 to honor the history of Tompkins Square Park.
