i don’t think it’s fair to expect everyone who listens to ‘city pop’ to be familiar with R&B. sure they can be similar, but it definitely can have its own distinct sound too. love both! you can’t get everything from one genre. city pop is too broad of a term anyway..

have you considered that city pop might just be the starting point for some people? it doesn’t mean they’re avoiding R&B, they just haven’t delved into the scene yet. they hear a song they like and follow that path first. it’s really that simple

It’s pure alt racism. Actual R&B is too scary for them so they listen to Japanese people making the same music. There is nothing inherently wrong with enjoying the music of city pop, but there is something wrong if you are listening exclusively to it while ignoring Black artists.

as funny as this is, i feel like people are using it as an excuse to bash city pop itself. the issue isn’t the music, it’s that “city pop” is a vague label, especially going into japanese record stores asking for it like it describes one clearly defined sound

found an old cover I did of the Galaxy Express 999 track "Departure," heard a lot at the beginning and end of the TV episodes and one of my favourite melodies in all of anime. since the composer Nozomi Aoki passed away recently I thought I may as well post it as a tribute.
