Bernd Neuendorf, President of the German Football Association (DFB), demanded an explanation from FIFA and emphasized the need to dispel any impression of political interference in the sport. Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter stated that red cards should only be overturned in accordance with the rules and by independent bodies, not through the intervention of politicians.

UEFA reacted particularly strongly. The governing body declared that FIFA’s decision had "crossed a red line," noting that the tournament rules left no room for interpretation regarding the automatic suspension following a sending-off. UEFA warned that such a move undermines confidence in the competition and sets a dangerous precedent for world football.
