Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933-1945)
Relocated the Oval Office: Overhauled the West Wing, adding a second floor and a larger basement. Relocated the Oval Office to its current southeast corner location (1934). The East Wing was significantly expanded, and a second story added to conceal an underground emergency bunker (1942).

Harry S. Truman (1945-1953)
Total Interior Reconstruction: Due to the building being structurally unsound, Truman oversaw a nearly complete gutting and rebuilding of the interior, preserving only the exterior walls. The interior was rebuilt with a new steel-frame structure on a new concrete foundation (1948-1952). Also added the Truman Balcony to the South Portico.

John F. Kennedy (1961-1963)
Historic Restoration: First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy led an extensive, historically-guided restoration of the public State Rooms to give them a museum quality, acquiring historic furnishings and art. Established the White House Historical Association (1961). Constructed the modern Rose Garden (1962).

Richard Nixon (1969-1974)
Converted Franklin D. Roosevelt's indoor swimming pool into the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room (1970). Added a single-lane bowling alley in the basement.

Gerald Ford (1974-1977)
Had an outdoor swimming pool installed on the South Grounds (1975).

Ronald Reagan Reagan (1981-1989)
First Lady Nancy Reagan directed a major, privately-funded renovation and redecoration of the family residence floors (second and third floors) and adjacent West Wing rooms, restoring many historical antiques.

Bill Clinton (1993-2001)
Undertook a restoration and refurbishment of the Executive Mansion, including new carpets, draperies, and upholstery in the Oval Office and the Treaty Room (now a private presidential office) to restore its 19th-century character.

Barack Obama (2009-2017)
Resurfaced the south-grounds tennis court into a full-size basketball court and added the White House Kitchen Garden on the South Lawn (2009).

Donald Trump (2017-2021)
Completed a new White House Tennis Pavilion, refurbishing the court and Grandchildren's Garden (2020)

Donald Trump (2025-present)
Began a major project to demolish and rebuild the East Wing to construct a grand, privately-funded ballroom to increase capacity for large functions (ongoing).
