Today marks #WorldRefugeeDay.
It has been estimated that today there are 27.1 million refugees world wide, 41% of whom are children.
Millions of stateless people have been denied a nationality and refused access to basic rights like education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement.
This is a critical moment for how we talk about refugees. Divisive rhetoric is used to fuel and empower extremists, aggressively polarising societies and driving civil unrest. Gross mischaracterisation of why refugees seek asylum is xenophobic, racist, fatuous and deeply damaging.
Under the 1951 Refugee Convention, seeking asylum is a human right. Refugees are brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers. They all have aspirations like me and you, and are often embarking dangerous on journeys to seek a better life.
Refugees’ rights are human rights - To me, a refugee is someone that embodies strength, resilience and courage. Today I stand in solidarity with the millions of brave refugees that have fled their homes in search of a stable life.
