agile is an attitude. Understanding the Agile Manifesto principles takes disciplined practice and learning from failures. In this post, we explain the principles behind the Agile Manifesto for software development.

Since the early 2000s, the Scrum Master job title has exploded in the job market. And as markets behave, there have been many ups and downs.
The Scrum Master's accountability in the Scrum Framework represents a unique position, marking a complete break from Taylorism.
The Scrum Master is a courageous individual. Perhaps a fool to even take on the assignment. The Scrum Framework rules do not grant them any authority over the team members. Yet, the Scrum Master is accountable for enabling a group of people with egos and drama to develop into a cohesive team. They are the one who has everyone else’s back. They are a leader who earns the trust of their team one day at a time.
Influencing people with no explicit authority teaches one to let go and embrace uncertainty. It also teaches a great deal about oneself. The Scrum Master is in the thick of it every day, creatively leading the Scrum team to resolve the tensions between the needs of the individual, the team, and the larger organization. Fulfilling the Scrum Master's accountability effectively is a humbling experience.
Taylorist, rigid organization structures can smother this drive into a set of routine behaviors. And many Scrum Masters get rendered ineffective.
As with any market when a brand takes off, fake replicas get traded as well. In my experience, an effective Scrum Master stands out from the crowd. Their personalities differ greatly, and they are not conformative. They are change-agents.
The worldwide tribe of Scrum Masters identifies itself as programmers, facilitators, experts, coaches, mentors, and practitioners. They are multi-skilled. Frankly, they scare people who have been conditioned to take orders and give orders. They have broken out of the shell imposed by limitations of others' expectations and taken ownership of acquiring skills necessary to problem-solve through the complexities of people, product, and technology challenges. They have gained exposure and experience to a variety of organizational issues. And they have had to find a way for the right people to acknowledge the flaw and then support them in improving the system. They are the ethical hackers of the organizational operating system.
Effective Scrum Masters have the qualities of an effective leader. They are emotionally mature, hear “bad news first” on a daily basis. They cause the removal of impediments. They are field-tested.
In my work experience, effective Scrum Masters get promoted to managerial positions. They have the experience and exposure to develop win-win solutions for organizational challenges.
Before you place someone in a managerial position with organizational power and authority, test them out for a year as the Scrum Master.
You will find out if they have the wits to lead.
Innovation and Management core capabilities are integral to business agility. Most organization leaders understand this intuitively, but they run into alignment issues operationally.

If I were to use a metaphor for different agile scaling frameworks, then it would be:
(1) Nexus: Sheepdog
Guarding and herding Scrum teams within the nexus to develop an increment each Sprint.
(2) LeSS: Snow Leopard
Inspecting and adapting in a challenging environment with many Scrum teams as a cohesive whole.
(3) Scrum@Scale: Turtles..all the way down!
Meetings are everywhere and for everyone.
(4) SAFe: Chicken-Bear-Fish
This beast of a “framework” has the courage of a Chicken, the risk exposure of hanging out with a Bear, and the flight of a Fish.
Comparing Agile Scaling Frameworks can become a case of comparing apples and oranges. But the one thing in common to different approaches is the dependency management mechanisms designed into the framework.

We evaluate Empirical Goal-based, Empirical Flow-based, and Deterministic Plan-based scaling approaches.
We look beyond the surface labels into the dependency management mechanisms and governing constraints to evaluate them on their own terms.
