Unpopular Opinion: Too many entrepreneurs spend time pointing out what their staff aren’t doing well or how inadequate they seem.

But not too many ask themselves:
- How clearly have I articulated the vision?
- What kind of culture am I building (not just talked about)?
- Have I created the right environment for people to work?
- Am I investing in training, measuring performance, giving timely feedback and rewarding good work?
- How well am I modelling the expected behaviour?

A major life-check I've had to wake up from and to is...

Growing up, most of the ideology around us postured "success" and "getting results" around character, behaviour, habits, and being the "good guy" generally to "eventually" get ahead in life...

They destroyed my yoghurt business.
They scattered my bakery. They chop everything 😄.

But guess what?

Same people… built my business into a billion-naira venture from scratch.

Finding good people is a skill.

You must keep searching until you find them.

People are the real structure of any business.
Find good people. Pay them well and treat them well.
And they will take care of your business.

I live abroad… and they still run my business effectively.

People, people, people… it will always be about people.

You need people to create the right systems and structure. You need people to uphold and maintain the standards. You need people to improve things and keep them relevant as situations change.

In short, it will always be about people. People before systems all the time, every time. People will make you, people will break you. In your business, pay attention to the people.

What many business owners miss is that you’ll need different types of people at every stage. If you miss that alignment, it will severely impact your business.

At the early stage, you need scrappy, hands-on people who can do a bit of everything. People who are comfortable with chaos, ambiguity, and figuring things out as they go. Structure is light, speed matters.

As you start to grow, you need people who can bring some order into the chaos. People who can define processes, introduce discipline, and create some level of consistency without slowing the business down.

At scale, you need a different breed entirely. Specialists. Managers. Operators. People who can run systems, track performance, enforce standards, and optimize for efficiency and profitability. At this stage, “winging it” becomes dangerous.

The mistake many founders make is holding on to the same type of people for too long or hiring for the wrong stage. The scrappy generalist may struggle in a structured environment, while some grow into it. The corporate specialist may suffocate in an early-stage hustle.

So it’s not just about having good people. It’s about having the right people, for the right stage, doing the right things.
