In a way, it made me hopeful they reacted so uncomfortably because they knew something was wrong and had to be fixed. Go grade 4s! It was a difficult topic to address so deeply.
Today I asked my students to pick from a box of pencil crayons the one that was "skin colour". Here were the results. Then, when I asked why they had not chosen the brown crayon, the discomfort was immediate. It opened our discussion on racism and unlearning our prejudices.
