True life story. I know a couple with two kids who moved to the US from Nigeria. They were both bankers and the husband got a Master’s admission (no funding) and came on an F1 Student Visa while the rest of the family came with him on F2 Dependent Visas. He paid for his Master’s from a combination of previous savings and side hustles. His wife, being an F2 visa holder, did side jobs too, like cooking for people, braiding hair and so on. In other words, although she couldn’t formally work for a US employer, she found plenty of ways to be productive and financially contribute.

After graduation, the husband was on F1-OPT and started working. It wasn’t looking like his employers would file for his H1B work visa so the wife, an accountant by training, decided to study nursing in an accelerated two-year program. She became a nurse before the husband’s F1-OPT expired, got a well-paying job at a hospital and the whole family was able to file for a Green Card based on her nursing degree.

I am sharing this story because many of you are asking me if you should bring your family along on an F2 visa because they won’t be able to legally work for a US employer. My answer is always yes. Come over first, and you will figure things out. This couple didn’t plan all of this ahead of time. They just knew they all wanted to live together and they trusted their resourcefulness and God’s grace to show the way. Believe that when you get to the bridge, you will cross it. Family first; leave no one behind.
