URC RE-ENTERS COFFEE EXPORTS TRANSPORTATION AFTER AN 8-YEAR ABSENCE

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Uganda exported 8.6 million bags of coffee between June 2025 and May 2026.

While Uganda Railways Corporation did not handle any of those volumes, we are pleased to announce that we are now back in the coffee export business, having successfully transported its maiden coffee export consignment by rail. A URC train last made a similar journey to Mombasa in 2018.

The consignment comprised 29 containers, made up of 28 (20ft) and 1 (40ft), weighing 606.60 tonnes. On road, moving this cargo would have required approximately 17 heavy-duty trucks, based on an average payload of 36 tonnes per truck, at an estimated cost of USD 84,500 given prevailing road rates of about USD 2,900 per 20ft container and USD 3,300 per 40ft container.

URC transported the entire consignment on a single train at a rate of USD 735 per 20ft container & USD 990 per 40ft container, bringing the total rail freight cost to USD 21,570, saving the client USD 62,930 in freight costs alone if they had opted for road.

In addition, the shipment on a single train removed about 17 trucks off the road, easing road congestion, lowering carbon emissions, and reducing the risks associated with multiple truck movements.

For URC, this marks a welcome return to coffee haulage and a meaningful step in diversifying our cargo portfolio. More importantly, it demonstrates how rail can make Ugandan exports more competitive on the global market while contributing to Uganda's broader economic development agenda.
