"Men do not make history; rather, it is history that, above all, makes men and thereby absolves them of blame," wrote one of the greatest historians of all time, Fernand Braudel. He was a structuralist, and this statement represents an especially strong version of that view. What surprises me is that he wrote it in his final, unfinished book rather than early in his career.
His masterpiece, The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Philip II, is built on three distinct levels of historical analysis. The first is the history of the longue durée, where the passage of time is almost imperceptible: the history of human beings in their relationship with geography and the environment. The second is the history of social groups, economic structures, and institutions—the level that interests me most. Finally, there is the history of events, the history of wars, revolutions, crises, and political decisions, such as the Great Depression of 1929.
Braudel understood that this last level was the most popular among readers, but also the most uncertain and ephemeral, and it sits uneasily with his most extreme structuralist convictions.
