It takes just a few seconds to utter, feels incredibly light on the tongue, and usually masquerades as "just venting" or "catching cruise."

Yet, in the sight of Allah, backbiting (Ghibah) is a major sin that tears down the spiritual wall of our communities from the inside out.

In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah uses some of the most graphic, stomach-turning imagery in the entire Quran to describe this act:

“...And do not backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it.”

Why a dead brother? Classical scholars point out a profound parallel:

A corpse cannot defend itself, push back, or clarify its stance. When we speak ill of someone in their absence, they are completely defenseless against our words. Just as our physical nature instantly recoils at the thought of cannibalism, our spiritual nature should naturally freeze at the thought of damaging another person's reputation.

The biggest trap we fall into is thinking, "But what I'm saying is actually true, so it’s not backbiting!"

The Prophet ﷺ directly corrected this misconception in a famous narration. He asked his companions,
