Just see the double standard: four days after Russia invaded Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA suspended Russia. But after more than two years of bombing of Gaza leading to genocide, Israel is still playing. After more than 30 days of bombing of Iran and after more than 100 days of invasion of Venezuela, the USA is still playing. Sadly, hypocrisy is coded within Western DNA!

NATO is a military defense alliance (including the US, Canada, Turkey, and 28 European countries). The EU is a separate economic/political union of 27 European nations only. Most EU members are in NATO, but not all NATO members are in the EU.

Article 5 (collective defense) was invoked once: after the 9/11 attacks on the US. Over 1,100 non-US NATO soldiers died in Afghanistan supporting America.

NATO has little appetite for this kind of operation. It is a defensive alliance. This war serves Israeli regional interests more than anything else.

Trump’s threats come after 14 months of repeated shocks to the alliance. He has demanded control of Greenland, a Danish territory and NATO member. The US has cut financial support for Ukraine’s defense against Russia, forcing other NATO members to pay for American weapons. Trump has imposed punitive tariffs on allies. And Washington’s new national security strategy has been read in European capitals as ideological warfare against the continent.
Yet at the same time, Trump has been explicit that America will no longer fight wars far from home. America First. No foreign entanglements.
As with so much from this administration, the signals point in every direction at once.
