“I’ve been seeing all these headlines and opinions flying around claiming Cristiano Ronaldo is the “cancer” of the Portuguese national team.

I can’t help but laugh because it’s clear most of these voices haven’t actually watched Ronaldo properly. They’re quick to push Bruno Fernandes ahead of him, yet anyone who saw the matches knows the difference.

Bruno is a talented player, no doubt. But if he were truly elite at the highest level, he wouldn’t be wasting time with tactical delays and unnecessary nonsense on the pitch. At 31, he still has no major trophies to his name. Compare that to Ronaldo: he walked into Manchester United and delivered trophies. He went to Real Madrid and did the same multiple Champions Leagues, Ballons d’Or, and records. Even at Juventus, he brought silverware. That’s what winners do.

Meanwhile, people are also riding the hype with Vitinha and Rúben Neves both excellent players who are still only around 26 and firmly in their prime. That’s fair. But using them to diminish Ronaldo makes no sense. Ronaldo isn’t holding Portugal back; he’s the standard that elevated the team for nearly two decades.

Anyone blaming Ronaldo as the problem simply doesn’t understand football. They should probably stop pretending they do. The game has changed, but the fundamentals haven’t. Ronaldo’s mentality, work rate, leadership, and clutch performances are generational. The only player in the last 20 years and likely the next 30 who belongs in the same conversation is Lionel Messi. Full stop.

And let’s bury this tired argument once and for all: not winning the World Cup doesn’t erase Ronaldo’s greatness. If it did, you’d have to claim Kaká is better than Ronaldo just because Brazil won in 2002. That logic is absurd. Greatness isn’t defined by one tournament especially when Ronaldo dragged Portugal to a European Championship in 2016 and has consistently performed at the absolute highest level across clubs and country for 20+ years.

Ronaldo isn’t the problem. He’s still the benchmark. The noise says more about the people making it than it does about him.”

My 2026 Personal Finance To Do List: Nigerian Edition

1. Register a business, especially if you make income on the side. incorporate that hobby

2. Learn about Trusts, then do one. Wills are dated

3. Invest in foreign assets that will pay you a $ coupon, rental, dividend or interest

4. Redirect from buying individual stocks to Collective Investment Schemes, meaning mutual funds, Unit Trusts, ETFs, etc

5. Hold your Retirement Saving Account close

6. Invest in a wholly export business

7. Understand the difference between income and taxable income

8. Make sure you keep records, take a picture of significant receipts, email them to yourself, and label them "tax doc # xxx."

9. Income Investor? consider money market funds, instead of Fixed Deposits or Commercial Papers. FGN issued ecuities are also ok.

10. Be clear where your permanent home address is. Ask an accountant.
