On Monday we finally pubbed our deep dive into the USDA plant hardiness map. It has EVERYTHING:
👨🏽🌾 in depth gardening talk? ✅
🌈 pretty rainbows? ✅
🔎 self-hosted, zoomable maps INCLUDING AK and HI? ✅
🏃🏽a cute lil azalea running round? ✅

Senior developer Chris Amico (@eyeseast) will share his recent work exploring advances and opportunities to self-hosted maps during a session on Saturday, March 9, from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.: “How your newsroom can build a self-hosted map stack.” https://t.co/wXs5wfzgFe
It is imperative that @SylviaBurwell, Seth Grossman, Erika Pulley-Hayes, and Michael Tribble #UnlockDCist. It’s a matter of democracy.
See our letter below. We encourage you to share:
Must-listen today on @1a: The slow death of local news coverage, something the D.C. region has absolutely experienced in recent months, with the Post trimming the Metro section and @wamu885 killing @dcist and laying off 15 people. https://t.co/4NHqNRoNbX
And I would add to that it covers local news REALLY WELL in a city where many other outlets just don't. Pivoting away from day-to-day news and toward the fuzzy idea of more bespoke podcasts and events doesn't serve the public radio mission we ask listeners to fund.
I feel sick about WAMU's decision to gut its news team and close DCist. But as I told management in an email, the decision to apparently wipe more than a decade of D.C. history from the web is a complete abdication of their responsibility.
UNREAL. The folks at @1a, which is produced by @wamu885, say they asked the station's leaders if they would work to retain @dcist's extensive story archive, which dates back years. They... got no response.
"If a digital archive disappears... that is a true loss," says @kellymcb.
