Minister of Foreign Affairs Gedion Timothewos highlighted key continental and global issues in his remarks delivered today at the opening of the 49th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union in Addis Ababa.

The Minister noted that the session is taking place at a defining moment, as the international order and geopolitical structures are undergoing profound transformation. He observed that geopolitical competition, technological disruption, climate pressures, and growing contestation over strategic resources are shaping a new international dispensation. In this context, he stressed that Africa must seize the opportunity to become a strategic actor capable of providing African solutions to global challenges.

Gedion further stated that the African Union must emerge as a credible voice that advances the continent's priorities and safeguards its interests. Noting that Africa is home to eight of the world's ten fastest-growing economies in 2026, he said the continent is poised to become the engine of global economic growth in the second half of the 21st century. He also reaffirmed Ethiopia's commitment to the African Union and to promoting continental unity and strength.

The Minister emphasized the need for the African Union to secure a sustainable and reliable source of financing to effectively implement its decisions. He also underscored the importance of managing the continent's shared resources for integration and prosperity based on the principles of cooperation, equity, and mutual benefit, and stressed that Africa's challenges should be addressed through African institutions and frameworks.

Gedion further expressed Ethiopia's solidarity with the countries affected by the recent Ebola outbreak in parts of the continent and commended the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) for its preparedness and response efforts.

State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hadera Abera, today participated in the 1354th Ministerial Meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Africa.

During the meeting, Ambassador Hadera underscored the growing threat posed by global terrorist groups to peace and security across the continent. He noted the ability of terrorist groups to exploit emerging technologies, including digital platforms and social media, to recruit members, disseminate propaganda, and spread extremism.

Given the global shifts, he stressed the importance of operationalizing the Africa Standby Force and strengthening the implementation of continental normative frameworks to enhance intra-African cooperation on security and governance.

Ambassador Hadera also highlighted Ethiopia's efforts to combat domestic terrorism and its unparalleled contribution to addressing the scourge of terrorism in the region.

During the discussion, Minister Gedion highlighted that Germany is a key partner in development cooperation and trade for Ethiopia. He also underscored the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation on global issues.

State Secretary Géza Andreas von Geyr noted that Germany is a major destination for Ethiopian exports and emphasized the importance of further strengthening economic relations between the two countries.

The two sides also discussed cooperation on skilled labour, climate change mitigation and resilience, and exchanged views on regional developments and the situation in the Middle East.

Tourism: The New Engine of the Economy !

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority, today organized a Green Legacy Initiative seedling planting ceremony for members of the diplomatic community based in Addis Ababa at Entoto Park.

Speaking at the ceremony, State Minister Ambassador Hadera Abera said Ethiopia remains committed to green development and is implementing the Green Legacy Initiative in a way that sets an example for the world.

He noted that the initiative is not only helping affected areas recover but is also delivering tangible results in job creation and sustainable development.

The State Minister further stated that Ethiopia’s selection to host COP32 in 2027 marks an important milestone not only for the country but also for Africa in advancing efforts to address climate change, adding that today’s tree-planting program provides an important platform to further strengthen cooperation with the diplomatic community.

Director General of the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority, Kumera Wakjira, said that what is being planted today is not only a tree but also hope for future generations.

It is an honour to stand today at the 𝗘𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗢𝗣𝗜𝗔 𝗗𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦 national summit held under the theme "From Reform to Lasting Change," I reflected on the journey that has brought us to this moment, a nation that has continuously risen, built the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam with its own hands. These are not chances. They are the results of deliberate choices, anchored in the spirit of Medemer, the conviction that lasting change is built through coming together.

Our reforms are not an end in themselves; they are the foundation we lay for the generations that will come after us. For nation building is a collective work that does not conclude with any single generation, and with that conviction, I call on every Ethiopian to carry this spirit forward, to receive what we have built, and to rise higher still!

H.E. President Taye Atske-Selassie met with @BarhamSalih, UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Mr. Salih commended Ethiopia’s continued support for refugees despite shrinking humanitarian resources, noting the importance of such solidarity in a challenging multilateral environment.

At a London Climate Action Week discussion, “Making the Case for COP in a Fractured Geopolitical Environment,” organized by Chatham House, the COP30 President joined Gedion Timothewos, Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and COP32 President-Designate, and Türkiye’s Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, representing COP31.

Gedion highlighted Ethiopia’s strong track record on climate action, emphasizing the policy interventions implemented over the past eight years. He noted that COP32’s priorities will include ensuring continuity by building on the leadership and outcomes of COP31, which will be co-hosted by Türkiye and Australia.

He underscored that this approach reflects the overarching principle of Medemer, working collaboratively with those who came before us, to strengthen collective action and help reignite hope in the multilateral process.
