“sherwin,” risa said softly.

she took a breath, then another, her thumb slowly tracing the edge of her phone as if the small, familiar motion could keep her hands from shaking.

“we need to stop whatever this is.”

on the other end, sherwin stopped in the middle of the senate corridor. for a moment, he said nothing, and quietly asked, “bakit ngayon?”

“because i’m starting to want this too much.”

his chest tightened. “and you think i’d ask you to give up anything for me?”

“alam kong hindi mo gagawin ’yon. alam kong you’d never ask me to give up anything for you.”

she swallowed. “that’s what makes it harder. i know you’d never ask me to choose. but i can’t let loving you make me lose myself.”

“then what happens to us?”

“there is no ‘us,’ sherwin.” the words hurt coming out. “not if the price of having one is becoming less of who we are.”

she took a shaky breath.

“mauuna ang bayan, sherwin. lagi. bago tayo, bago ang kahit anong gusto natin para sa sarili natin.”

silence.

“if you tell me you love me,” she whispered, “i don’t know if i’ll be strong enough to leave.”

sherwin closed his eyes. he wanted to tell her no. that he could fight for this, that maybe they deserved one selfish thing after spending so much of their lives giving pieces of themselves away.

but he knew her. and he knew that asking her to stay would only hurt her more.

“i need you to make this easy for me,” she said.

“how?”

“let me go.”

his heart broke, but he forced the words out.

“okay.”

neither said goodbye. neither said i love you. they didn’t have to.

after the call ended, risa cried because she still loved him. and alone in the corridor, sherwin whispered the words she would never hear:

“i hate that loving you means i have to let you go.”
