Recent developments in Hong Kong, including the ousting of elected politicians and the crackdown on civil society groups, are of serious concern to Aotearoa New Zealand. We reiterate our call for the protection of the rights and freedoms of people in Hong Kong.
Increasing restrictions on opposition voices & civil society in Hong Kong are deeply concerning:
➡️ 55 democratically elected district councillors disqualified & 250+ pressured to resign 🗳️
➡️ Trade unions forced to disband 👷
➡️ 🇬🇧 calls on HK Gov to uphold freedom of speech
The disqualification of more than 50 elected representatives undermines Hong Kong’s democratic institutions & civil society. Australia supports freedom of expression & association in HK, as promised by China in the Joint Declaration & HK’s Basic Law.

You have to grow some teeth and be willing to use them.
You might argue, "Well, I shouldn't be able to bite people" - the thing is, you should be able to and with the necessary force. Because if you're able to bite people, generally, it's the case that you don't have to.
Massive congratulations to foil fencer Cheung Ka Long for winning #gold, Team Hong Kong’s first medal at #Tokyo2020 and first gold since 1996!! #wearehongkong
I am honored and proud to have appeared in the final historic issue of #AppleDaily. I stand by my promise, now even more than ever: we will not back down and we will continue to #StandWithHongKong. Even though Apple Daily was silenced, we will not! 🇭🇰✊
Everyone, not only conservatives, should be concerned with Big Tech’s attacks on our freedom of speech. If they can silence the President of the United States, they can silence you.
The international community must act robustly, decisively and swiftly to help journalists in danger in #HongKong, before it is too late
#PressFreedom is being dismantled and journalists are increasingly at risk
