Understanding Tsotsitaal & isicamtho:

Tsotsitaal and isicamtho are both street slang that originated in what is now Gauteng. However, many people like to think they are the same slang which is false.

Tsotsitaal is the Sophiatown era variant that uses an Afrikaans based lexicon with supporting words from Sotho, Zulu and isiXhosa. Isicamtho on the other hand is the newer variant that uses a Sotho or Zulu based lexicon, with supporting words from Afrikaans.

Tsotsitaal and isicamtho have roots from old prison languages of the 19th century, namely Sabela. Sabela is a prison language that was born in Natal and uses heavy Zulu, Xhosa and Khoe words. Khoe words were highly favoured for their intricacies which made it difficult for white prison guards to understand prisoners. The mixed Zulu, Xhosa, Khoe lingo was perfect to fool the white prison guards because some understood Zulu to an extent, so this new language made it harder for them to understand.

In the 1950s, prisoners were released to the streets and they brought their knowledge of prison slang to the cities, creating a new, street slang with roots from Sabela and other prison slang. Afrikaans was favoured due to the heavy usage of Afrikaans by natives at that time. Natives worked as house maids, farm workers, miners which required Afrikaans - the language widley spoken by White employers in the PWV. The mixed ethnic neighbourhoods such as Sophiatown and Alexandra allowed for the incorporation of words from languages like Sotho, Zulu, isiXhosa and isiNdebele.

In the late 1970s/early1980s, when Afrikaans had a bad reputation, the youth of that era shifted from using an Afrikaans lexical slang language (Tsotsitaal) to a Zulu or Sotho lexical variant which they would soon dub, "isicamtho". This new variant still had some similarities with the Afrikaans Tsotsitaal, but relied heavily on Zulu or Sotho lexicon. Afrikaans words are still retained from Tsotsitaal such as; Ken (to know), Waar (Truth), Daar/Daai/Hier/Die (There/That/Here/The), Outhi (man), waar (where) lag (laugh) and others.

Isicamtho goes by many names depending on the location - some of the well known ones are isitsotsi, isikasi, Kasitaal and isiringas. The location also determines which lexicon is favoured, with some Soweto locations preferring Zulu and some Sotho. The East Rand preferring Zulu and in some areas Pedi and the West (Westonaria, Carltonville) and South (Vereeniging) preferring the Sotho/Tswana, and Sotho/Zulu lexicon respectively. Remember, Joburg speakers are multilingial, you'll still find Zulu isicamtho widely spoken even in Sotho dominated areas like Carltonville and Vereeniging.

A PC gamer has found a fun way to make Steam games feel like physical cartridges again.

Reddit user u/Jibril-sama created a setup using old 2.5-inch SSDs, with each 128GB drive holding one Steam game and a small script.
When the SSD is plugged into the PC, it automatically opens Steam and launches that game.

The creator bought the used SSDs for around €7 each and uses them to store games that aren’t played often, freeing up space on the main drive.

When they want to play a game, they simply plug in the SSD like inserting a game cartridge.
