Science begins with a question and its impact depends on how far we choose to explore it.
This experiment demonstrates that impactful scientific inquiry can extend beyond traditional laboratories.
It also highlights a broader implication: the environment is a key driver of behavioral and cognitive development
These findings suggest that behavior is not fixed, but highly responsive to environmental conditions.
Environmental enrichment appears to play a critical role in shaping cognitive flexibility and behavioral confidence.
Additional observations included:
• Improved spatial memory.
• Sustained exploration, even in the absence of a reward.
• Reduced hesitation and fear-based responses.
More importantly, decision-making patterns changed:
The hamster showed an increased willingness to select the complex path, indicating enhanced risk tolerance and exploratory behavior.
Behavioral analysis using AnimalTA revealed a marked shift:
• Maze completion time decreased from 78 seconds to 19 seconds.
• Activity levels increased.
• Decision latency was significantly reduced.
To investigate further, we introduced environmental enrichment.
The habitat was redesigned to include tunnels, climbing structures, and digging areas increasing spatial and sensory complexity.
The experimental design was straightforward:
A two-path maze presenting a decision between:
• A simple, low risk path with a small reward.
• A complex, uncertain path with a larger reward.
Initial observations showed clear caution and a preference for safety.
