本日、日本最東端に位置する南鳥島周辺の排他的経済水域の海底に存在するレアアース泥の「採取試験」の結果が公表されました。

今回、世界で初めて、約6,000メートルの深海から引き揚げた、「約50トン」のレアアース泥の成分が判明しました。

なかでも、レアアース泥に含まれるレアアースの３割を占める「イットリウム」は、世界的に稀少であり、半導体製造装置のコーティング剤や、排気ガスに含まれる有害な窒素酸化物を浄化する触媒をはじめ、半導体や自動車産業などで使われており、我が国にとって重要なレアアースです。

今回の成果を踏まえ、来年2月、本格的な採鉱試験を実施する予定です。
海洋研究開発機構（JAMSTEC）をはじめとする関係各位のご尽力に改めて敬意を表します。

レアアースをはじめとする重要な物資については、特定国に過度に依存することのないよう、サプライチェーンの強靭化に向けた取組を、官民を挙げて、取り組んでまいります。
