In occupied Palestine, the Israelis have banned the display of the Palestinian national flag. In response, Palestinians have adopted the watermelon, which has the same colors as their flag, as a symbol of defiance.

Following the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel banned the public use of the Palestinian flag. In response, Palestinian artists have increasingly used watermelons in their work as a form of protest against the occupation.

After Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir told police to confiscate Palestinian flags in public places and with Israeli lawmakers attempting to restrict its use even more, peace group Zazim placed the flag in watermelon form on taxis in Tel Aviv.

Some Palestinians carry watermelons with them as a small but highly symbolic act of resistance against the Israeli occupation as they go about their daily lives.

In 1980 a law was passed banning artwork that used the colors of the Palestinian flag, meaning that even painting a watermelon could land you in jail.
