I genuinely don’t understand why so many liberals celebrate Samay Raina. The cases against him were wrong. Free speech matters, and comedians shouldn’t be dragged into criminal cases for offensive jokes. But that doesn’t mean he’s beyond criticism.

His humour has always relied heavily on cuss words, many of them misogynistic, along with rape jokes, body shaming, and shock value. After everything that happened, I expected some self-reflection or at least a little restraint. Instead, he seems to have doubled down, even platforming comedians making jokes about something as horrific as the Epstein files.

The right wing often bends its principles when it’s politically convenient. We have seen their leaders embrace people they once called corrupt. I don’t expect consistency there. What surprises me is liberals doing the same. If you speak about feminism, misogyny, and dignity for women, then cheering someone whose comedy repeatedly punches down feels like a contradiction.

You don’t have to support criminal prosecution to say someone’s comedy is harmful. Those are two very different positions.

Had this happened in the West, the celebrity would likely have called out the brand and distanced herself for pulling down an ad in which she had done absolutely nothing wrong.

But here, too many celebrities seem to care more about money than principles. I wish @kritisanon calls out the brand for removing the ad in the name of respecting cultural sentiments.

So the jewellery brand Giva bowed to patriarchy, and called it cultural sensitivity.

It is genuinely sad to see how quickly a woman’s clothing can become a matter of public outrage, moral policing and even an apology from a brand. Giva has taken down its Kriti Sanon ad after incels and right-wing trolls objected to what she was wearing, calling it inappropriate for Raksha Bandhan. The brand has since apologized, saying it respects Indian culture and traditions.

But what exactly was inappropriate about the ad? Kriti was wearing a bralette, something that is hardly alien to Indian fashion or culture. We are a country where the temples of Khajuraho depict the human body and sexuality openly, yet today a woman showing some skin in a jewellery advertisement is treated as an assault on our values.

And let’s be honest: if the brother in that ad had been shirtless or wearing shorts or boxers, would we have witnessed the same outrage? Probably not. Because somewhere beneath all this moral policing is the deeply patriarchal idea that a woman’s body, clothes and choices are things society has the right to regulate.

The jewellery brand may have intended to respect people’s sentiments, but taking down the ad also sends a troubling message: that if enough trolls create enough outrage, they can decide what women are allowed to wear and how they are allowed to appear.

We should be careful about normalising this kind of moral policing. A woman wearing something you don’t like isn’t an attack on your culture. And women shouldn’t have to constantly defend their right to simply exist, dress and express themselves without being subjected to public morality tests.
