In America, a stranger will hold a door for a man who is nowhere near it.
And that man is then expected to run.
I was thirty feet away. The man at the door saw me coming, took hold of it, and held it. For me. Arm extended. Waiting.
We do not hold gates for strangers we will never meet again. So I understood at once. This was an honor, and a raised arm is a debt that grows heavier by the second.
I could not let his arm fall. To let it fall would be to let his honor fall.
So I ran.
Not a sprint. A man in armor does not sprint. A dignified, urgent shuffle. Quick steps, straight back, grave face. The sacred jog of a man who must not keep a gatekeeper waiting.
I reached the door and bowed. "Thank you for holding the gate."
"No problem, man."
No problem. He had strained his arm in my service and called it nothing. The humility of these people.
But here is where it turned.
He was so pleased by my bow that at the next door, he ran ahead to hold that one too. Now I owed him two debts. So I jogged faster.
A woman saw us and held the third door. I jogged to her. A teenager held the fourth, grinning. I jogged to him. Word, it seemed, was spreading.
By the fifth door I was no longer walking anywhere. I was simply being passed from held door to held door across America. Jogging. Bowing. Jogging. Bowing. A man forever thirty feet from where he meant to go.
I have not reached my destination.
I do not expect to.
A held door must never wait. This is the law now. I did not write it. But I will die defending it.
So tell me, America.
When you hold a door for a man far, far away, and he breaks into that little run,
do you know you have just placed him in your debt forever?
I think you do.
I think that is why you smile.
The whole God of War outrage makes sense to me.
I've never played GOW, so I don't really care at the end of the day, to be honest.
But it makes sense, it's the same thing as if they decided to make a new Tomb Raider game and used a man instead of Lara Croft.
Lara Croft is the franchise, the story is about her, just as Kratos is for God of War.
If you want to make a new story within the same universe, give it a new name. Otherwise, all you'll get is pushback from the majority who care about the story of the main character when you try to feed off their success.
The game isn't out yet, they still have time, but will that save them from the negatives they've already suffered due to the perceived removal of fans' investment?
Star Wars is a good example. The world of Star Wars was rich in lore, and the larger universe itself felt like the main character, in my opinion. When Disney came in, they shifted the focus from the entire property to targeted characters. That change removed what drew in the majority of fans. Star Wars has lost a lot of its former cultural dominance as a result, they moved away from what made it special.
This is the same dynamic I see happening with what we know about the new God of War. There's a real risk that the special element that drew people in gets removed.
The culture war angle is part of the current backlash, but I don’t think it’s the biggest issue. People are mostly calling out the perception of a bias we've seen across gaming for over a decade now, and it's echoing here.
No one has a problem playing as a woman in a game. It's the perception that what built God of War is being dismantled that people are mad about.
On a positive note:
Chancellor Merz has stepped into a reality distortion field.
He declared himself “confident” that 🇩🇪 will achieve independence from overseas providers in data center technology by 2030.
A pious wish so detached from today’s reality that it belongs firmly in the realm of fantasy.
#OerrBlog
“We’ve done the analysis, reusable rockets aren’t economic.”
SpaceX makes reusable rockets economic.
“We’ve done the analysis satellite internet isn’t economic. The antenna alone is tens of thousands of dollars. The cost to manage a constellation that size, the radiation, the space hardened solar cost…”
Satellite internet appears to be a very good business with antennas in the $100 range.
“We’ve done the analysis, orbital data centers aren’t economic. The radiators, launch costs, the radiation, the solar…”
You are here.
i realized something recently
bernie sanders and AOC have damaged the fabric of america immensely but we rarely talk about it
bernie/AOC have vilified successful businessmen & women. calling CEOs like elon musk, bezos, zuck evil. yes these people have shortcomings - but they are also truly self made, come from normal/humble backgrounds. with hard work they created trillions in economic value. isn’t that a fundamental part of what america is about? the land of opportunity?
in the 2000s when i was in elementary school, bill gates and steve jobs were viewed as role models. our teachers taught us about how much they achieved + given to society. these CEOs were actually respected and i believe this culture brought up a generation of ambitious hard working americans
now, kids are being taught that working hard and becoming a billionaire is evil. we’re essentially telling them to have victim mindset and stay poor
i know bernie/AOC & crew are never going to take responsibility. i can’t even tell if they realize what they’re doing
