Oh and one extra thing, people who have never worked professionally in VFX will not understand this and you will hear lies from everyone who don't know shit trying to push an agenda. Ai did NOT kill vfx. VFX killed VFX, wayyyyyy before people were even talking about Ai Art. No vfx unions, massive layoffs, underpaying and overworking burnt out artists, perpetual huge turnovers, everyone on drugs just to manage, shitty extremely tight profit margins, extreme competition to outbid other studios and fuck each other over. VFX has always, been shitty. Because Hollywood, obviously. VFX dug it's own grave and crafted the casket itself with rhinestones, Ai showed up and went "wtf happened here?" and is literally just putting a rose on top of that grave. The movie, Obsession's budget was 750k and made 512 MILLION dollars. 512 MILLION. The people who worked on the Actual Pixels of that film, made pennies while having to cancel plans with friends and work over time into the night on weekends. Anyways, I'm very happy to never touch a 3D program ever again unless it's for my own interests.
I really do enjoy you asking tho. Thank you. Finally, to answer the question, why? A Senior FX Supervisor is laid off for 3 years straight and finally gets access to a technology that lets him comfortably without burning out, create any film he wanted like he had his own production team, without judgement and without letting all the profits go to some dumbass rich guy with no imagination chilling on a boat in Fiji. And people love the content I'm making and encourage me to make more, which is a small weigh-in honestly, I don't enjoy social media. It's all ragebait videos and Ai slop. Social media doesn't even show me my friend's content anymore or the people I follow, it's hilarious. This is my little pocket of the internet where I get to make content for myself that I would watch and people enjoy it.
Also "a cold robot that doesn't know what makes people horny". These are all my ideas and my eye. The human touch is why my content is going viral. I'm writing prompts like I'm talking to a cinematographer and the actors themselves. I'm sure there's many ai folks that are like "make me fun nsfw film teehee", and just let it do everything because they have no imagination. And those people aren't gonna make it because people can tell it's slop. Entertainment is an even bigger competition of ideas now, If you have not lived life and have no personal experience to draw from that an AI could never replicate, people know and that's why they don't watch. I don't even scroll social media anymore because it's all the same slop. Fable bear has always been from the beginning for me. I don't do commissions. I make what I find hot or funny, and people just so happen to watch it. That's what it started as and that's what it will continue to be.
I think that's a false perpetuated fallacy. I enjoy the ideas. If you've never done VFX in your life, it's not the same as any other process. It sucks. It's technical. It's a ton of research and a lot of times can be grueling, even if you're good at it. You are chained to your desk. I prefer to be outside, not sitting at my desk staring at pixels for hours. I like to be with my friends, not sitting at my desk spending days modeling something.
With Ai, I get to make whatever I want and go get breakfast or do chores while it happens. And I know we like to blanket all Ai as coming from some data center. I don't think that works in my case when I (Have To For NSFW content) use comfy UI locally on my fan cooled graphics card and a local LLM for all my prompts. And if we're going to complain about the electricity use, now we're just pushing the goal post because I spend more time playing video games than generating Ai.
Yay a reply. It's a simple answer. VFX is dead. Especially independantly. I grew up watching so many cool vfx channels. They don't do vfx anymore. I worked at the best vfx companies. They are now 1/10th the size and everyone I know in VFX is either unemployed or switched careers. VFX is dead. You do a good job? People assume it's Ai. You do a bad job? People assume it's Ai. Debatably on that same point,I believe the Internet is 97% dead by this point. You don't know what to believe that's real anymore. If you're a new person trying to break into proper vfx as a career, no ai, especially independantly making your own films, don't do it. Unless you like working for free and have a side career.
