fans of celebrity find fantano’s halsey review offensive b/c to them music isn’t an artform, it’s a vessel to learn about the artist’s personal life.
as a result, any critique is read as a critique of the artist as a person and not the execution of the art itself.

everyone saying she’s overdoing this/shouldnt be paying it so much mind aren’t realizing the review struck a nerve, not because it was “insensitive”, but because halsey did everything to make the great impersonator indie/alt respected and it didn’t work
people who are more concerned with what anthony fantano has to say about anything than actually engaging with music and art itself are very annoying.
arguing with an arbitrary numerical score for an album is more important to some of you than the actual music
One last thing because discourse over an old album review is stupid. The context of the album is kinda unnecessary to the review. Not everyone who listens would have known Halsey's medical situation. It would still have been a bad review even if she was healthy.
he has a point though. fans will fixate on his score or a score that pitchfork gives out vs the actual body of work. albums become a talking point about their chart place or a score they receive rather than the art itself.
He’s an asshole for saying those things about Halsey, but that doesn’t change the fact that the album was really bad. If it had been about something else im pretty sure it still would’ve got bad reviews
Halsey claps back at music critic Anthony Fantano after he claimed people cared more about his review of her album than the project itself amid ongoing discourse:
“I’m certain my least memorable song will be remembered more fondly and for more time than anything you ever do with your life will be.”
