Che spettacolo incredibile hanno creato a Milano, in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, quelli di Vogue per l’apertura della Fashion Week.

Greg Abel, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, on what he tells a 14-year-old who wants to work there someday:

The boy had flown in from Hong Kong to ask the question in person. Abel's answer contained no mention of grades, degrees, résumés, or investing.

He started by crediting the boy's father:

"Well, I think your dad said it best. He highlighted that to become part of Berkshire, to own some Berkshire shares, you're going to have to work hard."

Then he widened it out:

"Hard work takes all of us a long ways in life. And I would never diminish that. There's a lot of things that matter in life, but if you start with a great work ethic, and have that attitude that you want to contribute, you're going to go a long ways in life."

Effort comes first, but Abel pairs it with something specific: "that attitude that you want to contribute." Contribution is the posture he names, not ambition or recognition.

The most interesting part of the answer is the sequencing, and it's easy to miss:

"You'll find great enjoyment because as Warren said, you'll then if you work hard, you're going to find the things you love in life and it'll lead to that."

Abel is saying the work comes first and the passion follows from it. You discover what you love by grinding at something, rather than identifying it in advance and then pursuing it.

That inversion matters, because the conventional advice given to ambitious 14-year-olds is precisely the reverse: figure out your passion, then commit. Abel, echoing Buffett, tells him to commit first and let the passion surface.

He closed with a line worth noting for its own reasons:

"We truly look forward to the day you're part of Berkshire."
