Imagine Earth’s gravity as an invisible sculptor, carving a wildly uneven “sea level” across the planet—even where no ocean exists.

The geoid is that perfectly level surface: the shape the world’s oceans would settle into if they could flow freely under gravity alone, ignoring winds, tides, and currents. Far from a smooth sphere, this equipotential surface undulates dramatically—soaring +85 m above the reference ellipsoid near Iceland and plunging −106 m below it over southern India.

In the visualization, those gentle real-world bumps and dips are amplified by a spectacular factor of 10,000, transforming subtle gravitational hills and valleys into a dramatic, alien topography.

The data powering this view comes from GOCO06s, a pure satellite gravity field model produced by the international GOCO (Gravity Observation Combination) project. It rests on more than a billion precise measurements gathered over 15 years by 19 satellites—most notably NASA’s GRACE mission and ESA’s GOCE satellite—revealing Earth’s gravity field in unprecedented detail.
