Christian faber, the lead concept artist for bionicle has shared video recordings dating back to 1999 of really early bionicle prototypes, known as "voodoo heads"

These ones in particular may have been predecessors to the toa, given their color scheme.

And here's the "witch doctor", an early predecessor to the villain of bionicle, makuta.

Surprisingly enough, it appears that he moves around via remote control. It also appears that the ball on chain weapon he has spins around as he walks. Really cool stuff if you ask me.
