I rented a one-room self-contained apartment at Tema Community 5, near the GPHA Quarters, through an agent.
The payment was made at the landlord’s office (Lamer Fishing) in Community 1. The agent was present. I paid ₵7,200 for one full year (₵600 per month).Just four days later, a man showed up with landguards, soldiers and police and ordered us to vacate immediately. He claimed the person we paid was only a caretaker and not the real owner.We contacted the man we paid. He insisted he was the rightful owner, that he had documents, and that it was just a misunderstanding. He told us to stay put. We refused and demanded a full refund so we could find another place and avoid trouble. Five different tenants (including us) were thrown out the same day and left stranded with nowhere to sleep.We reported the case at Community 2 Police Station. One of the officers, Mr. Okyere, immediately recognised the man and said if he had known it was him, he wouldn’t have wasted our time. He called the man and ordered him to report to the station, but the man never showed up.A friend later connected us to an ASP at Community 1 Police Station. The ASP also knew the man and called him. The man eventually gave us only ₵2,000 and promised the balance. When we returned to the ASP the next day, he said he would no longer handle the case and told us to go back to Community 2.Till today:No arrest has been madeThe remaining ₵5,200 has not been refundedThe man is powerful in his area and moves freelyMy brother and I have been sleeping in a kiosk. The stress and poor conditions made us both fall sick. We have been diagnosed with typhoid and are currently under treatment. The ₵2,000 he gave us is what we are using for medical bills.We are stranded, sick, and unable to work or rent another place. Our only hope was the police, but nothing has been done.
