The gunfire had not stopped for hours.

Deep in the forest, frightened teachers held students close, whispering prayers they hoped Heaven could still hear. Every child wanted to go home. Every parent was still waiting for a phone call that never came.

The rescue team knew there was only one chance.

As they advanced, the officer leading the mission looked back at his men and said quietly, "No child should die wondering if help is coming."

Moments later, the forest erupted.

Bullets flew in every direction. The soldiers pushed forward, shielding civilians with their own bodies. One after another, the teachers and students were led to safety.

Then the radio crackled.

"The civilians are safe… Keep moving… Don’t come back for me."

Silence.

When the mission ended, every teacher was counting students. Parents were embracing children through tears.

But one family was waiting for someone who would never walk through the door again.

A soldier had given everything so that strangers could return home.

We often celebrate freedom without knowing the price someone else paid for it.

Today and Tonight, before you sleep peacefully with your family, remember those who stood between innocent lives and danger.
