The significance of Galadriel giving Gimli three strands of her hair goes back thousands of years before the Years of the Sun.

In Valinor, Fëanor was captivated by Galadriel’s hair. Tolkien wrote that the Eldar believed the light of the Two Trees had been “snared” within it, and many thought this helped inspire Fëanor’s desire to capture their light in the Silmarils.
Fëanor asked Galadriel three times for a tress of her hair. She refused him every time and would not give him even a single strand.

Ages later, Gimli stood before her in Lothlórien. When Galadriel asked what gift he desired, Gimli humbly named a single strand of her hair, saying he did not actually ask for it, but only named his desire because she had commanded him to. Galadriel gave him three. What was denied to Fëanor, one of the greatest of the Noldor, was given to a Dwarf.

Gimli promised to set the hairs in imperishable crystal as an heirloom of his house and a pledge of goodwill between the Mountain and the Wood.

The moment also reflects Gimli’s transformation in Lothlórien. He entered the realm amid the old mistrust between Dwarves and Elves, but Galadriel’s kindness profoundly affected him. He would become a close friend of Legolas.
