Dolly Parton, her parents and siblings doing a version of “In The Pines” in 1976, a song long associated with Lead Belly but whose origins predate him…likely came out of a hodgepodge mix of songs from Southern Appalachia.
Imagine growing up in absolute dirt poverty in east Tennessee, daughter of a tobacco farmer, going to school wearing rags your mother stitched into a coat, and when you die the British royal family has its military band play your up-the-workers country-pop anthem in tribute.
Appalachia is such a beautiful and special place and you can’t understand that unless you’re from there or have ties there. No one loved or believed in Tennessee like Dolly and that she wore that with such pride was something special.
The fact that Mamdani isn’t allowed to be considered for president because of a citizenship technicality but a convicted felon IS, shows just how broken our political system actually is.
The minimum acceptable position right now is Nuremberg trials for everybody that worked for ice.
The moderate position should be to follow in the footsteps of Simon Wiesenthal.
My actual position is against the terms of service for this website.
The world: Americans need to like steal a tank or something? Or like vote? Maybe like go walk in the street with signs some more so we know you’re trying. Like I’m so freaking mad right now that you aren’t stealing a tank and voting. You don’t care.
Government: we can just come into your house and kill you in the face if we want. We also have robot dogs, stealth aircraft, hypersonic weapons and quantum sensing.
The world: omg steal a tankkkkkk or something like do something omg?? Have you tried protesting more? If it’s a big enough protest the robot dogs and stealth aircraft will only take out like half of you. But not the ones in the tank
We should be clear about who Charlie Kirk was: a man who believed that the Civil Rights Act that granted Black Americans the right to vote was a “mistake,” who after the violent attack on Paul Pelosi claimed that “some amazing patriot out there” should bail out his assailant, and accused Jews of controlling “not just the colleges – it’s the nonprofits, it’s the movies, it’s Hollywood, it’s all of it.”
His rhetoric and beliefs were ignorant and sought to disenfranchise millions of Americans – far from “working tirelessly to promote unity” as asserted by the majority in this resolution.”
We can condemn his horrific assassination and the scourge of political violence without uplifting these ideas.
