Veteran human rights activist and opposition LEAD party founder Linda Masarira has died. She was 43.
Masarira passed away early Sunday in Harare, according to colleagues.
Friend and associate Abigale Mupambi announced the death, saying she had spent time with Masarira on Friday.
"I was with her on Friday and we spent several hours together at my office," Mupambi said. "She was fine and there was no sign that something like this would happen."
Masarira had been battling poor health for some time but recently appeared to be recovering, Mupambi added.
A leading advocate for women and children, Masarira entered politics with the People's Democratic Party (PDP) under Tendai Biti. She later served as spokesperson for Thokozani Khupe's MDC-T faction before founding her own party, LEAD, in April 2019.
In 2023, she attempted to run for president but was blocked when the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission raised nomination fees from $1,000 to $20,000.

MINER RESCUED AFTER 8 DAYS UNDERGROUND
An intensive eight-day rescue mission at Guensey Gold Mine in Goromonzi has ended with the miraculous recovery of Pardon Ruvengo, who was brought to the surface alive this morning.
