The comments that follow images like this are gracious. Some people even wish they were part of this family. But there is another angle to the story that many wouldn't want to be part of. And only a few can endure.

Imagine logging on to social media and seeing people, including your students, insulting your mother for no reason apart from her decision to join a political party they oppose. Some invest their creative energy in inventing malicious stories to vilify people they oppose. Women in politics and public service endure harsher attacks.

For this reason, some families dissuade their members from accepting public service, political appointments, or standing for a cause. As you celebrate the first woman vice president of Ghana (H Kwasi Prempeh says "first female" is too biological) and drool over her accomplished children, resolve to do something about it.

If your family member is in the eye of the vitriolic storm, lend your support. And if someone else's family is out there, don't be a recruit for destruction. By all means, hold them accountable, but if you have no reason to attack them, politics or your personal dislike should not be enough to launch an onslaught that could eventually break them or discourage others from taking up a cause in the interest of the public.
