Vance: "Trump is the only head of state in the entire world who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this point in time…If I was in the cabinet of the Israeli government, I might not be attacking the only powerful ally that I have anywhere left in the entire world."
🌑JD Vance, the hatchet man: "Do I think there are people within Israeli society who would like to turn Iran into Libya, basically a failed state with 90 million people Probably…I'll tell you right now: is Iran turning into a Persian Libya good for the United States of America? Absolutely not."
How to avoid a World on Fire
I enjoyed participating in the ABC podcast hosted by Peter Martin. Together with Gareth Hutchens, we discussed numerous topics, ranging from technology and inequalities to demographics and dysfunctional politics. Focusing on my recent book (”The Twilight Before the Storm”) we attempted to identify the type of policies that might help defang the extremes and avoid a world on fire.
I hope you enjoy the podcast.

We now live in a world of rolling bubbles
Thank you to CNBC Europe for inviting me to discuss the issue of AI bubbles and what it means for investors.
The bottom line: we reside in a world of rolling bubbles with concentration of returns never meaningfully broadening as one bubble replaces another at a lightening speed. Winners get everything, with losers permanently derated. Be careful not to be caught in the middle of “zero marginal cost waves”. The only way to survive is to accumulate capital by anticipating the next bubble rather than banking on a return of normality and mean reversion. We also discussed what is meant by an AI bubble. Is it software, hardware, chips, robotics and automation, quantum computing, biotech, metaverse, 3D printing or something else. Will datacenters at some stage turn into shopping malls and amuzement parks? The answer: all of the above but not at the same time.
I hope you enjoy the short clip.

Saudi crude tankers reappear on AIS after Hormuz transits
Three laden Saudi-flagged VLCCs have reappeared on AIS after more than two months of being dark, suggesting tanker operators are cautiously restoring visibility through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to #MarineTraffic data, the VLCCs Jaham, Shaden, and Awtad resumed AIS transmissions on 18 June. Shaden has listed Kiire, Japan, as her destination, while Awtad is heading to Ulsan, South Korea. Jaham’s destination remains unclear. According to Kpler, the three VLCCs are carrying around 6 million barrels of crude.
I just made this my ring-tone.
It could all lead to nothing, or worse (a joint US/Israel resumption of the war). But there hasn't been a week where American leaders have spoken so sternly, clearly, truthfully and decisively about Israel since . . . well, perhaps ever.
Saudi Arabia has started moving a cluster of empty (ballast) VLCC tankers it has kept near India for most of the conflict toward the Gulf of Oman for a potential Strait of Hormuz crossing. Another sign that oil production in the Persian Gulf is/will be coming back.
