@ottomanenglish Notorious violent janitsars, pests of Crete, they sucked the blood of their Christians brothers, that they hated. They run to save their lives after the Union of Crete with its Mother, because their crimes were so heinous that punishment would have been severe.
Εάν "οι Εβραίοι ελέγχουν τον κόσμο", όπως αναπαράγουν το κλασικό αντισημιτικό στερεότυπο οι ψευτοεθνικιστές, που λυσσομανούν κατά της συμμαχίας μας, τότε, ρε σεις, είναι ένας λόγος παραπάνω να είμαστε σύμμαχοι του Ισραήλ. Μα όλα εγώ;
NATO Is Paying Turkey Not to Become What It Already Is
👇 A Line of State statecraft note at @tovimacom.
Turkey is strategically external and institutionally internal: it builds security beyond NATO while retaining access, intelligence and blocking power within it.
It threatens one Ally with war and maintains military control over part of an EU member state; Russian systems now sit inside its defence and critical energy infrastructure, Turkish channels have served Iranian power, Ankara carries a second collective-defence obligation with Saudi Arabia and nuclear-armed Pakistan, and full membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is openly contemplated.
Together, those choices reach the Washington Treaty itself. Article 1 restrains threats and force, Article 3 requires collective capacity and resilience, and Article 8 bars incompatible external commitments. Material breach opens a route to suspension or termination; the defaulting state has no veto over the consequences of its own breach, and the Treaty’s silence on expulsion is not immunity.
Nor does Turkey need to leave NATO. Leaving would be a demotion: no other arrangement gives Ankara comparable power over Western decisions.
Article 5 no longer anchors Turkish security. It functions as credit behind a policy the Alliance neither designs nor controls.
The Straits are geography, not a contribution. Ankara has turned access into rent and consensus into an institutional tollbooth.
Turkey is now a net strategic liability to the Alliance.
The answer to Turkish indispensability is redundancy. The Constantinople Protocol begins with one rule: no Turkish gate remains singular. NATO must be able to move, supply, decide and, if necessary, fight without Turkish permission.
The question is no longer how to keep Turkey in NATO. It is whether NATO should keep Turkey at all.
