Thread: how I think about the growth of AI capabilities and what it means for us as they keep getting stronger.
I think the right model for comparing humans and AI is not any single dimension like intelligence or aggregate performance on economic tasks. Rather, I view both humans and machines as having a whole range of capabilities. This includes both physical (eg. doing things with our hands, walking) and mental (eg. strategic thinking, mental math, emotional intelligence).
For most of human history, machines have only exceeded us in very few areas, eg. a strong early example is water and windmills. So we can look at the situation in 1500 like this:
Over the last two decades, the internet optimized for distribution.
Publishing became easier. Discovery became faster. Content could reach global audiences within minutes.
But distribution and preservation solve different problems.
One determines how far something travels.
The other determines whether it remains accessible years later.
The internet solved reach.
The challenge now is making knowledge durable enough to survive beyond cycles of attention.
Every platform eventually changes.
Interfaces evolve. Business models shift. Communities move elsewhere.
That isn't a failure of platforms. It's the nature of software.
The problem arises when knowledge depends entirely on those changes.
If access to context, research, reasoning, and collective history disappears whenever a platform evolves, then knowledge remains tied to infrastructure it doesn't control.
Durable knowledge requires a more stable foundation than any single platform can provide.
