Honoring my father, Otto Huybensz, this Memorial Day. He fought at the Battle of the Bulge, was wounded twice, captured twice, and remained a POW until the end of the war. Rest In Peace, dad. #WWII
“A wave is building. The kind of wave that comes once a generation. And people have been pushed too far and they decide all at once, altogether, that enough is enough…”

Anger is mounting in Venezuela after the military barred citizens from entering zones devastated by Wednesday’s twin earthquakes.
As Teresa Bo explains, thousands of people have travelled to help rescue victims, not trusting the government to save survivors in time.
Graham Platner: “We need Medicare for All in this country. We need universal childcare. We need high quality public education going all the way through higher ed and trade schools. We need a tax code that goes after the wealth from those that have stolen and hoarded it”
Today is Constitution Day of Ukraine!
Exactly 30 years ago, the Fundamental Law of our state was adopted. And it is Ukrainian men and women who give it strength. Our people write the pages of our history, and it is they who fill the pages of our Constitution with life: through their example, their deeds, their work, and their struggle for Ukraine.
Sovereign. Self-determined.
Democratic. Governed by the rule of law.
European. Peaceful. Independent.
Happy Constitution Day of Ukraine!
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has called for prompt, independent investigations into deaths in US immigration custody, and said that families have rights to truth, justice, reparations, and guarantees that abuses will not recur.
The death rate among detainees has more than doubled since Trump returned to office.
It's not everyday that the United Nations demands investigations into the USA for our treatment of immigrants. You'd think our mainstream media would be giving this the attention it deserves, but of course the domestic cable news coverage on this is very quiet.
When kids grow food at school, something interesting happens to their test scores.
Studies on school garden programs have found improvements in science achievement, math performance, and reading scores compared to control groups.
The Texas Sprouts program, a randomized controlled trial in primarily low-income Hispanic schools, found that fourth graders in the gardening program showed significant gains in reading.
Researchers think the mechanism is partly nutritional: kids who garden eat more vegetables, and kids who eat more vegetables learn better. The garden changes what goes in the lunch box, which changes what happens in the classroom.
The dietary findings are even more consistent. Every one of twelve peer-reviewed studies measuring garden programs against fruit and vegetable consumption found improvements.
In short: kids who grow tomatoes eat tomatoes. Kids who grow carrots try carrots. The vegetable that was refused at dinner gets eaten off the vine by the same child who planted it, because they grew it themselves and that changes their outlook on it.
Karl: Republicans are going to make you the poster child for the Democratic Party.
Mamdani: Let them. We don’t have to ask ourselves what life looks like if a socialist wins. I won last November, and over the course of these last six months, what we’ve delivered for working people are the very things we were told were impossible.
We’ve delivered free child care for two-year-olds for the first time in New York City history. We’ve delivered tens of millions of dollars back to tenants who were taken advantage of by bad landlords. We’ve delivered 165,000 potholes being paved. And we’ve done all of these things while also delivering the lowest recorded crime in our city’s history.
That’s what it looks like to have democratic socialism. And what you’re seeing is that New Yorkers experienced this for six months and made the decision that they wanted to see more of it on the national stage as well.
❗️I know I’m going to catch a lot of hate from the “Pro-🇺🇦 crowd” for this… but seriously.
Moscow is looking SO FIRE right now 🔥🔥🔥
Unfollow me if you want, but Moscow 🇷🇺 has never looked hotter.
Let’s hope it stays that way.
BREAKING 🧵
A gut bacterium is showing up — or rather disappearing — across all three phases of COVID-19.
Severely ill patients have less of it.
Recovered patients get it back.
Long COVID patients don't.
Its name is Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. And what it does explains a lot. 👇
Ossoff: "Last week, when they gathered in Atlanta to remove Black elected officials from office not by defeating them at the polls, but by manipulating maps to dilute minority power, they saw you mobilize, Savannah, and they backed down in fear of your power. A wave is building ... let's make sure they hear it down at Mar-a-Lago, that Georgia will bow to no king!"
The fireflies lighting up your yard right now are laying eggs in the soil beneath your feet. What you spray on that soil this summer determines whether they hatch or die.
Firefly adults only live for a few weeks, but the larva that hatches from each egg lives one to two years underground, hunting slugs, snails, and soft-bodied insects through the dark, doing serious pest control work you never see.
Lawn pesticides, grub treatments, and broad insecticides don't distinguish between Japanese beetle larva, mosquitoes, or firefly larva. They all die.
The three biggest threats to fireflies, according to researchers surveyed across 350 firefly scientists worldwide, are habitat loss, light pollution, and pesticides, in that order. All three are things that happen in yards.
What actually helps is mostly what you don't do. Stop the lawn chemicals. Leave the leaf litter in fall, firefly larvae overwinter in it. Mow less, or leave a patch unmowed entirely. Turn the porch light off after dark so the adults can find each other and finish the job they came up to do.
The eggs are in the ground right now. The question is whether or not we'll create the environment they need to hatch.
Has there ever been a World Cup where a team is playing in the host country on the literal same day that the host country is bombing that team's country?
